Day of the Dead

Hackney City Farm has had a strong Mexican community working there for many years. The farm hosts many traditional Mexican events including Day of the Dead. Hackney Harmony have performed at the Day of the Dead events for the last 3 years, last year's event taking place at Richmix in Bethnal Green.

Sophia feels strongly about this particular tradition having travelled extensively in Mexico and connected with the people and their ancient culture. "Death is something that we so often resist and become afraid of. I feel this is at the root of many of our limitations and struggles. Death is inevitable. It is only possible with life. Creation and destruction, joy and grief, birth and death - all integral parts of our experience. By singing about death we welcome and create harmony with it, and begin to make peace with  all other aspects of 'death' and 'endings' in our experience."
